Digging holes

There’s an interesting conversation being relayed around the parish. A certain RBC councillor (I’ll spare his blushes by not naming him) said he didn’t believe anything was buried at the former RAF Tollerton because they didn’t have Caterpillars didn’t exist then.

When we all stopped laughing at this incredible viewpoint, one of the residents of Tollerton Lane, who is a member of a historical tractor society said that mechanised diggers dated as far back as the latter days of the First World War. Having mechanised diggers trenching, tunnelling, and digging very large holes on WW2 military establishments was a very common activity.

Shall we tell the RBC councillor that his historical view of machinery is worse than wrong?
